1968 Romney

From The Wiki Trail

1968 Romney is a mod created by Obummer, with support from many other people. The mod features relatively light lore and very personal writing, shining a light on the inner workings of the Romney '68 campaign.

Republican George W. Romney, Governor of Michigan, faces Democratic Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and American Independent Party nominee George C. Wallace in the 1968 election. Only Romney is playable.

Lore[edit | edit source]

The Primaries[edit | edit source]

Why George Romney won the nomination in this timeline was not clearly explained by the modman, but it seems clear — Romney did not make his gaffe about "brainwashing", and Rockefeller never announced that he would be available for a draft, and continued his support for Romney. According to the first question, Romney got the nomination on the fifth ballot.

The General Election Campaign[edit | edit source]

Claude Kirk is the presumed canon choice, but the modman hasn't actually made clear who the canon choice is. Anyways, multiple themes loom large in the storytelling:

Leonard Hall[edit | edit source]

Leonard Hall was Romney's national campaign manager in 1968. Throughout the campaign, he alerts Romney on potential threats and opportunities to his candidacy, given that Romney is usually written like a well-meaning, but naive politician. It's unclear how historically accurate that perception of Romney is.

Romney-Goldwater Letters[edit | edit source]

After Romney essentially abandoned the Goldwater '64 campaign, Barry Goldwater sent him a scathing letter accusing him of all sorts of things. Romney fired back, sending Goldwater another letter accusing him of "extremism". These letters were leaked by the press in 1966 and harmed Romney's prospects in '68. Icy relations with conservative Republicans, in this mod, is still a problem, and the Romney-Goldwater letters will need to be addressed at some point.

WIP, just needed to get this page made for now, will get this done once I finish up 1920b.
